  • On lambs following castration, tail docking and mulesing.
  • On piglets to mitigate pain during and for up to 4 hours following castration and tail docking.
  • On horses for traumatic superficial skin wounds.

Tri-Solfen Wound Anaesthetic & Antiseptic Solution is an easy-to-administer, non-pre-scription, over-the-counter formulation with a powerful combination of two local anaesthetics for rapid and longer-term pain relief, adrenaline to reduce bleeding and an antiseptic agent to help reduce infection risk. Tri-solfen’s gel formulation also helps to seal the wound for improved wound healing. Tri-Solfen is the only product registered in Australia for cattle that has all of these modes of action, leaving it unrivalled for these types of surgical wounds.

Clinical studies conducted by world-leading universities have shown the positive effect Tri-Solfen has on reducing pain. Importantly, over many years, producers have seen the proof of Tri-Solfen’s positive effects on stock behaviour right from the moment of application. Tri-Solfen Wound Anaesthetic & Antiseptic Solution fits perfectly with your goal to provide a high standard of care for your livestock. It also fits with the industry’s objective to meet consumer expectations that livestock production must include a high level of consideration for animal welfare.

Why use Tri-Solfen Wound Anaesthetic & Antiseptic Solution?

Tri-Solfen is a unique 4-in-1 wound care product that provides;

  • Pain relief
  • Reduced bleeding
  • Infection control
  • Wound care

Tri-Solfen is the only product registered in Australia for sheep and cattle with all these modes of action, leaving it unrivalled for surgical wounds.

How does Tri-Solfen Wound Anaesthetic & Antiseptic Solution work?

Tri-Solfen is a viscous liquid that is easily applied to surgical wounds. When used correctly with the dedicated Tri-Solfen applicator it forms a foaming gel over the wound that helps to protect the wound from secondary infection and aids in the wound healing process.

Tri-Solfen Wound Anaesthetic & Antiseptic Solution is a 4-in-1 wound care product

  • Both fast and longer-acting pain relief
    • Lignocaine is a fast-acting anaesthetic that provides animals with fast-acting pain relief.
    • Bupivacaine is a longer-acting anaesthetic that provides prolonged pain relief
  • Reduction in post-operative bleeding
    • Adrenaline constricts blood vessels, reducing the loss of blood
  • Reduces wound healing time
    • Cetrimide is an antiseptic agent that helps reduce the risk of infection of wounds
  • Reducing inflammation and long-term pain
    • Reducing bleeding and infection helps to minimise the inflammation process, reducing and slowing down the pain cascade process

Tri-Solfen Wound Anaesthetic & Antiseptic Solution Pain Relief is a local anaesthetic and antiseptic gel spray that adheres to wounds and acts to numb the wound with a long-lasting analgesic effect. It also contains active ingredients designed to minimise bleeding, protect against infection, coat the wound and promote healing.

The unique gel formulation can be easily applied on-farm as a one-off treatment for surgical wounds. The pain relief component of the product contains two proven topical local anaesthetics: fast-acting lignocaine for immediate pain relief and long-acting bupivacaine for prolonged post-operative pain relief. Adrenaline is included for its ability to reduce blood loss whilst prolonging the anaesthetic action.

Tri-Solfen Pain Relief also contains Cetrimide, an antiseptic widely used to cleanse skin and wounds to provide protection from bacterial contamination. Tri-Solfen’s gel base adheres well to the wound and acts as a barrier to environmental stimuli to improve wound healing.

In Sheep, Trisolfen is sprayed onto the wound to simultaneously anesthetize, alleviate pain (advance animal welfare), control bleeding and protect against infection. Its viscous gel base is also designed to form a long-lasting protective barrier over the wound.

Tri-Solfen Wound Anaesthetic & Antiseptic Solution pain relief is proven to be highly successful in the treatment of accidental wounds, castration, tail docking, branding and disbudding in several species. Extensive trials have indicated that the onset of wound anaesthesia is very rapid and readily apparent within one minute of application and there is evidence of a significant ongoing analgesic effect even after 24 hours.

This product is brilliant calves are straight back to feed no swelling or signs of pain they sit quietly no stretching or kicking. Very happy, only the shelf life to short as my cousin and i share a 1 litre pak we only have about 50 bull calves to mark so it would be good if there was a 500 ml pack.

I wont cut or dehorn without it. Does a great job of helping the animal get over marking and continue grazing or drinking from mum, not laying about feeling sorry for itself. Stops infections and growth setbacks.

Use of the special Tri-Solfen applicator is recommended.

Mulesing and tail docking in lambs:

  • Apply the Tri-Solfen spray to the wound immediately after mulesing or tail docking.
  • Ensure that the entire wound area is evenly covered with spray, particularly wound edges.
  • Do not spray to runoff.
  • Insecticidal preparations registered to treat mulesing wounds can be applied after the application of Tri-Solfen.
  • However, high volume fly treatments are not suitable to be used as they are likely to wash the Tri-Solfen from the wound.
Mulesing Total Dose
Lambs (5kg – 10kg) 6mL
Lambs (11kg – 15kg) 8mL
Lambs (16kg – 20kg) 10mL
Lambs (Over 20kg) 12mL

Tail Docking (if not concurrently mulesed) Total Dose
Lambs up to 10kg 1.5mL
Lambs over 10kg 2mL

Castration in lambs and calves:

  • Cut through the skin of the scrotum as per normal procedure and gently extrude the testis to expose the spermatic cord (without cutting or tearing it).
  • Insert nozzle through skin incision (prior to removal of testicle) and carefully advance applicator along the length of exposed cord as far as possible within the scrotum.
  • Eject one-third (1/3) of the total Tri-Solfen dose as the applicator is withdrawn from the scrotum to coat the spermatic cord.
  • Insert nozzle through the other scrotal incision and apply one third(1/3) of total Tri-Solfen dose to the spermatic cord (as described above).
  • After application of Tri-Solfen to the spermatic cords, the testicles can be extracted from the scrotum and removed as per the normal procedure.
  • Lastly, apply the final one-third (1/3) of the total Tri-Solfen dose to the edges of the scrotal skin wound(s).
Castration Total Dose
Lambs up to 10kg 3mL
Lambs over 10kg 4.5mL
Calves 30kg – 100kg 6mL
Calves over 100kg 9mL

Disbudding and dehorning in calves:

  • Perform disbudding or dehorning for each horn according to accepted procedures.
  • Immediately after disbudding or dehorning the first horn, apply Tri-Solfen with the recommended applicator to completely cover the wound including the surrounding burn wound (if using cautery) or the surrounding cut skin edge (if using excision).
  • Repeat step 2 for the second horn, also ensuring the wound and surrounding affected tissues are completely covered.
  • Do not spray to run off.
  • Take care to prevent Tri-Solfen from getting into the eyes of treated calves.
  • Use of the special Tri-Solfen applicator is recommended.

Piglets Castration:

  • Tri-Solfen acts to induce local anaesthesia within 30 seconds of application, and provides acute peri-operative pain relief during and for up to 4 hours following castration in piglets.
  • Instil Tri-Solfen to scrotal wound immediately after skin incision to fully coat the exposed mucosal tissue of the spermatic cords and the cut skin edges, then wait for 30 seconds
    before severing the spermatic cord.

Tail Docking:

  • Apply Tri-Solfen to the wound immediately after tail docking. Ensure that entire wound area is evenly covered with spray, particularly wound edges.
  • Do not spray to run-off.

Although adrenalin stores longer in glass containers,  we cannot recommend decanting the Tri-Solfen from the approved manufacturer packaging. It is the exposure to oxygen that decreases the efficacy of adrenaline. Even in glass containers, the more significant the oxygen exposure area, the quicker the decrease in efficacy. Further clarification should be sought from the manufacturer, Dechra Pharmaceuticals, on 1300 015 825 or [email protected].

The APVMA, which oversees the registration of Tri-Solfen - Pain Relief For Lambs And Calves in Australia, has approved a nine-month shelf life for the 1L & 5L packs and six months for the 20L containers.  The short shelf life is to do with the Adrenaline component used to make Tri-Solfen.  As Tri-Solfen is packaged in HDPE containers and not glass as is typical for Adrenaline products, it may escape over time, reducing the pain relief efficacy of the product.

Tri-Solfen offers both fast and longer-acting pain relief.  Bupivacaine is the longer-acting anaesthetic used in Tri-Solfen that provides prolonged pain relief.  It blocks the nerve signals from damaged tissue responsible for the sensation of pain.  Although not recommended when using castration rings, Tri-Solfen will provide pain relief to the area where it is applied.
